Kitesurf trick

Frontroll Handdrag

Intermediate
  • Drag
  • Rotation

A low frontroll where your front hand plants and drags through the water as you roll. It joins your frontroll and your handdrag into a slow, stylish rotation right above the surface.

How to

  1. Set up with tension

Ride with good speed, the kite at 11 or 1 o'clock and the bar trimmed so the lines stay tense.

  2. Free the front hand

Let go with your front hand and keep your back hand at the centre of the bar.

  3. Reach as you kick

Kick off your back foot early, before the kite lifts you, and stretch your front arm forward so the roll starts and your hand plants in the water.

  4. Roll over the hand

Keep the hand in the water and resist the pull so you roll low and slowly over it.

  5. Hand back and land

As you come round, drop your legs, put your front hand back on the bar and dive the kite to land heading downwind.

Common mistakes

  • Going too late

Start the move before you feel the kite lift so you stay low enough to reach the water.

  • Half-hearted reach

Reach well forward and throw yourself down towards the water so the hand plants.

  • Hand lifted clear

Keep your back hand central and the bar trimmed so the kite holds you without lifting you away from the water.
