Kitesurf trick
Handdrag Backroll Transition
- Drag
- Transition
- Rotation
A low backroll transition where you drag a hand through the water as the kite moves to the new side, then dive the kite to ride away. The drag slows the roll down for a smooth, stylish change of direction.
How to
Edge with speed
Ride with speed on a strong upwind edge, weight toward the tail, kite at 11 or 1 o'clock.
Fly the kite up
Steer the kite up past 12 o'clock toward the new side with a slow send so it lifts you only a little.
Start a low backroll
Pop low, throw your head and shoulders back and start a flat backroll close to the water.
Drag your front hand
Let go with your front hand and drag it through the water as the board rolls over you, keeping your back hand on the bar.
Dive and ride away
Dive the kite powerfully into the new direction, get both hands back on the bar and land riding away.
Common mistakes
Sending the kite too hard
Use a slow send so you stay low enough for your hand to reach the water.
Pushing on the hand
Brush the water lightly and keep your weight on the kite.
Weak kite dive
Dive the kite hard on the new side so it pulls you out of the roll.
