Backroll Kiteloop

Advanced
  • Jump
  • Rotation
  • Kiteloop

A backroll with a kiteloop, where the kite pulls you through the rotation and carries you downwind. Usually the first rotation riders combine with a loop.

How to

  1. Set up the approach

Approach as for a sent backroll with the kite at 11 or 1 o'clock, on a fast kite in wind you are not overpowered in, over deep water.

  2. Send and carve

Give the kite a positive send and carve up into the wind as it lifts so the carve starts a slow rotation.

  3. Stamp and level

Stamp off your edge and level the bar as you pull in so the kite stops high near 12 o'clock.

  4. Loop at halfway

Once you are halfway round and looking back where you came from, steer the loop hard with both hands and keep it turning.

  5. Let it breathe

As the kite climbs back toward 12, ease the bar out so it catches you, and land heading downwind.

Common mistakes

  • Mistimed loop

Pull the loop when you are halfway round, because earlier may not bring you round and later can over-rotate you.

  • Letting off the steering

Keep steering until the kite is heading back up to 12 so it can catch you.

  • Throwing your head

Look forward along your shoulder and let the carve rotate you so the rotation stays slow enough to time the loop.
