Inverted Backroll Transition

  • Inverted

A backroll transition where you throw your head back, kick the board above you and grab the nose while upside down. A stylish step beyond the regular backroll transition.

How to

  1. Edge hard upwind

Ride with speed on a solid upwind edge with the kite at 11 or 1 o'clock, on a moderate kite over deep water.

  2. Send and pop

Send the kite toward 12 and pop off your edge as you would for a backroll.

  3. Throw your head back

Throw your head back and kick the board up so it passes above you.

  4. Grab the nose

While upside down, grab the nose with your free hand and keep the kite at 12.

  5. Dive the kite down

Release the nose, dive the kite down to the new side and land riding away in the new direction.

Common mistakes

  • Board not getting high

Throw your head back harder and kick your legs up toward the kite.

  • Kite drifting past 12

Hold the kite at 12 while you are inverted so you keep floating.

  • Diving the kite late

Dive it to the new side as soon as you release the nose so it supports your landing.
