Kitesurf trick
Backroll Grab
- Jump
- Grab
- Rotation
A backroll with a grab held during the rotation. It adds style and control to a rotation you already own and is a natural step once both feel easy.
How to
Edge hard upwind
Ride with speed and edge hard, kite at 11 or 1 o'clock.
Start a slow backroll
Pop and turn your head over your front shoulder, carving gently so the rotation stays slow.
Bring the board up
Tuck your knees as you rotate so the board comes up close to your body.
Grab by halfway
Grab the heelside tail or fin with your back hand by the halfway point while your front hand stays on the bar.
Release and land
Let go as you start to drop, steer the kite forward and land tail first heading downwind.
Common mistakes
Rotating too fast
Carve more gently into the roll so you have time to grab and land.
Leaning back to reach
Keep your head up and pull your knees in so the board comes to your hand.
Releasing too late
Let go as you begin to drop so your legs are free to absorb the landing.
