Kitesurf trick

Pop

Beginner
  • Fundamental
  • Jump

Springing off the water from a hard edge and line tension alone, without sending the kite. It is the base for wakestyle tricks and makes every other jump crisper.

How to

  1. Set your stance

Ride heelside with the kite at 11 or 1 o'clock, hands near the centre of the bar and your hips back over the back foot.

  2. Bear away gently

Flatten the board slightly downwind and ease the bar out a little to release some tension.

  3. Carve short and sharp

Carve back upwind hard and quickly so the lines load up.

  4. Stamp the back heel

Straight out of the carve, extend your back leg explosively against the heel edge, kicking up and upwind.

  5. Stay extended and land

Stay long through your body in the air and land tail first with the board pointing slightly downwind.

Common mistakes

  • Carving too long

Keep the carve short so the pop follows it straight away, before the kite pulls you off balance.

  • Pulling the bar early

Leave the bar out through the carve and the pop so the edge can load.

  • Soft back leg

Keep resisting with your back leg through the carve so you have something to stamp against.
