Kitesurf trick
Beach Start
- Fundamental
Starting from the beach or shallows instead of floating in deep water. It saves energy and is the standard way to launch once you can ride upwind.
How to
Set the board in front
Stand in knee-deep water with the board on the downwind side in front of you, pointing across the wind.
Front foot in
Put your front foot in its strap with the kite at about 11 or 1 o'clock, slightly behind you on the side opposite your direction of travel.
Steer the kite across
Steer the kite up through 12 toward your direction of travel so its lift helps you step up.
Step onto the board
Shift your weight onto your front foot, step up and place your back foot, then dive the kite gently to drive you forward.
Edge and go
Settle your weight over your back foot and start edging upwind.
Common mistakes
Diving the kite too hard
Use a small, controlled dive so you step on instead of getting yanked off.
Too shallow water
Start in knee-deep water so the fins clear the bottom.
Hunting for the back strap
Ride off first with your back foot on the board, then slide it into the strap.
Builds on
Unlocks
