Kitesurf trick

Transition

Basic
  • Fundamental
  • Transition

Changing direction to ride back the way you came, switching from one tack to the other. It keeps you from losing ground downwind and is the base for every jump transition later.

How to

  1. Slow down upwind

Edge a little upwind and slow your speed so you stay in control.

  2. Send the kite to 12

Steer the kite steadily up to 12 o'clock and let your weight come off the back foot.

  3. Shift your weight

Move your weight onto the front foot and flatten the board as the kite passes overhead.

  4. Steer to the new side

Bring the kite down to 10 or 2 o'clock on the new side as you switch your feet and stance.

  5. Edge away

Dig in the new heel edge and ride off in the new direction.

Common mistakes

  • Kite too low

Keep the kite near 12 o'clock through the change so it does not pull you off balance.

  • Sinking at the switch

Keep a little speed and steer the kite down on the new side without hesitating.

  • Losing ground downwind

Edge upwind before you slow down so you finish where you started.
