Kitesurf trick
Kite Relaunch
- Fundamental
Getting the kite off the water and flying again after a crash. It is one of the first skills you learn, and it decides whether a crash costs you ten seconds or a long swim.
How to
Let go of the bar
Let go of the bar or push it fully out so the kite stays depowered while it lies on the water.
Check your lines
Make sure the lines are not twisted or crossed before you start, with the bar the right way round.
Hold the opposite back line
Hold the back line on the opposite side to where you want the kite to go, just above the bar or at the float, so the kite turns onto its wing tip.
Let it slide out
Keep steady tension without jerking the line and let the kite slide to the edge of the window at 9 or 3 o'clock.
Steer up slowly
When it lifts off, put your hand back on the bar and steer the kite slowly up the edge of the window to 12 o'clock.
Common mistakes
Pulling the bar in
Keep the bar out while relaunching so the kite does not power up and drag you.
Pulling too much line
Hold the line still and feather it, because pulling in too much makes the kite fall back onto its trailing edge.
Steering up too fast
Steer smoothly so the kite climbs the edge instead of looping back into the water.
