Kitesurf trick

Body Drag

Basic
  • Fundamental

Letting the kite pull you through the water without your board. It teaches you how the kite responds and is how you get back to a lost board.

How to

  1. Park the kite at 12

Float on your front with the kite steady at 12 o'clock and both hands on the bar.

  2. Steer it down gently

Steer the kite slowly toward 10 or 2 o'clock to feel it pull you downwind.

  3. Lead with your front arm

To go upwind, lie on your front side-on to the pull, fly the kite with one hand between 10 and 11:30 or 12:30 and 2 o'clock, and stretch your front arm forward like a keel.

  4. Head for your board

Body drag upwind until you are just downwind of your board, then grab it.

Common mistakes

  • Diving the kite too hard

Steer in small, smooth movements so the pull stays manageable.

  • Drifting past the board

Start dragging upwind early, kite low and arm stretched forward, before you lose ground.

  • Kite too high

Keep the kite between 10 and 11:30 or 12:30 and 2 o'clock, because near 12 it lifts you and drags you downwind.
