Heel to Toe Transition

Beginner
  • Transition

Carving the board through a turn so you come out riding toeside in the new direction. A smooth way to change direction once you can ride toeside and make basic transitions.

How to

  1. Ride on a gentle edge

Ride heelside on a gentle edge with tension in the lines and the kite no higher than 11 or 1 o'clock.

  2. Turn the kite first

Steer the kite positively with both hands so it turns back across the window instead of creeping up to 12.

  3. Flatten and carve

Rock over the board as you steer, then flex your ankles to drive your knees onto the toe edge with your weight slightly back over the tail.

  4. Fly the kite through

As the board points downwind, level the bar so the kite settles on the new side at 11 or 1 o'clock without racing ahead.

  5. Ride away toeside

Keep looking where you are going, finish the carve onto the toe edge and open your chest forward.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the kite too gently

Steer it positively so it travels across the window instead of creeping up to 12 and stalling your turn.

  • Bending at the waist

Keep your head up and body upright and let your ankles and knees do the carving.

  • Looking back too early

Look where you are going through the carve, not at where you want to end up.
