Kitesurf trick

Deadman

Intermediate
  • Jump
  • Inverted

A jump where you hang upside down with the board above your head and let go of the bar with both hands, held only by your harness. An old school trick that needs the stopper ball set so the bar stays in.

How to

  1. Set the stopper

Move the stopper ball down so the bar stays sheeted in when you let go, and practise over deep water since only your harness holds you.

  2. Jump big

Edge hard and send the kite to 12 o'clock for a big, floaty jump.

  3. Head back, legs up

At the peak, throw your head back and kick your legs up so the board goes above your head.

  4. Let go and stretch

Release both hands and spread your arms wide while you hang upside down.

  5. Re-grab and land

Grab the bar as you come back upright, steer the kite forward and land heading downwind.

Common mistakes

  • Releasing before the peak

Wait until you are at the top and upside down before letting go.

  • Re-grabbing too late

Bring your hands back as soon as you start coming upright so you can steer for landing.

  • Stopper not set

Set the stopper ball before you ride out so the kite keeps its power when you let go.
